Don’t miss it!

After winning the British Fashion Council’s Streetstyle Designer of the Year Award three times and 21 consecutive seasons on the catwalk at London Fashion Week, Wayne sold Red or Dead to turn his attention (and Town Planning degree) to social housing – setting up Hemingway Design with his wife Gerardine.

Since then Hemingway Design have rejuvenated troubled estates and developed award winning new build housing schemes, working on a settlement of 3000 homes in Lothian and apartments in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

Wayne’s passions regularly conjoin. The DJ come Chelsea Flower Show silver medalist has turned the Tate into a silent disco and in 2010 created the glamorous festival ‘Vintage at Goodwood’.

Expect inspiration, humour, a splattering of politics and a dash of controversy as Wayne talks us through his entrepreneurial life and current projects.

Stay on for the first ever President’s Lecture After Party. Wayne and Sanky will be on the decks to share their joint love of Northern Soul with you, at Bloomsbury Bowl (just round the corner from the Lecture). After Party tickets are for lecture-attendees only, but need to be purchased separately. Book your ticket here.

“An obvious comparison that comes to mind would be Jeff Buckley fronting the White Stripes (and indeed they’ve been described as such), but that undersells both parties. Syme is a far better drummer than Meg White and Tom Iansek’s vocals contain an intimacy that Buckley’s showboating falsetto occasionally obscured.” – Beat Magazine

“I think Big Scary might be one to watch…PS: Girl drummers always, always rule.” – RRR

2010 has been quite a year for Melbourne two-piece Big Scary. International supports, national airplay, constant touring, sold out headlining shows and the release of four EP’s have seen the talented duo take heir varied sound to all corners of the country.

At the beginning of 2010, Big Scary announced they would be releasing four EPs dedicated to each of the seasons. Inspired by Mother Nature, each release was written and recorded in each respective season, and promised to be as varied as the seasons themselves. Inspired by the flurry of rich colour in autumn, the first drops of rain in winter, the blossom of new life in spring and the majesty of a summer thunderstorm.

Widely tipped as ones to watch by industry insiders, some thought the four seasons project a brave undertaking for the independent duo, doubting their ability to consistently release and tour this varied material. Instead, The Big Scary Four Seasons has served to show the breadth of talent and styles possessed by the versatile duo, with Big Scary recently announced as one of Triple J ’s 2010 ‘NextCrop ’ artists.

Featuring tracks from the three preceding limited edition seasonal EPs Autumn, Winter and Spring – including the infectious radio hit ‘Autumn’ from the EP of the same name, ‘Thinking About You’ the haunting lead track from the decelerated Winter EP and the thumping ‘Hamilton’, another runaway hit taken from third seasonal EP Spring. The Big Scary Four Seasons also includes four new tracks from Summer, which will be released exclusively as part of The Big Scary Four Seasons.

While the Melbourne duo may be more in tune with the schizophrenic weather patterns affecting their hometown than others, The Big Scary Four Seasons taps into talents which have seen Big Scary’s Tom Iansek and Jo Syme tour with a diverse range of bands including Editors, Florence and The Machine, British India, Vasco Era, Birds of Tokyo, Little Red, Midlake and Hungry Kids of Hungary.

Big Scary’s debut album is due to be released October 2011.

In a time where Grime Mcs and plastic pop dominates the British charts, real music lovers welcome with open arms the first offering from British solo artist, King Jacks.

King Jacks is a Rock ‘N’ Roll solo artist. He walks with the swagger that his Britpop heroes have paved the way for. Returning from Manchester, armed with a collection of songs whose lyrics relate to the common man at a time where the people of the world are already joining together, he unifies truth and empowerment as he chants his way through this indie anthem ‘Heroes’.

Backed by a tribal drum loop, a chorus of vocals and the hand claps behind him, he walks down the middle of the road with his lyric before leading us to a stomping climax that demand the hands in to the air! Backed up by a double A- side ‘I’m Not The One’ that yet again combines a roaring vocal with a pumping back beat, it seems that this ‘Born and Bred’ North Londoner has discovered the perfect combination of melody and beats! Indie and dance music! Manchester or London, this is Pure British Rock ‘N’ Roll!

Alongside the release of his album “Please Everyone, Please Yourself”, KJ has created a project called ‘e11even‘. It is based around the 11 tracks on his album, where each of those tracks is represented by a remix, a photograph and a video, all by different artist. He has been co-ordinating this for the last six months and is almost at the end with remixes by Beardyman, The Nextmen, Losers, E.P.I.C., High Rankin, videos featuring Danny Dyer and Frank Harper, and photoshoots with Rock ‘n ‘ Roll photography legends, Mick Rock and Andy Willsher. The Nextmen Remix of ‘Im Not The One is included on the debut E.P

The double A-side of ‘Heroes’ is available on iTunes and all good download stores from 21st March.

Brooklyn, NY – Amidst waves of richly textured melodies and driving beats rises a haunting voice intoning messages of modern hope and despair that will invade your memories. This is the sound of HOME VIDEO, Collin Ruffino and David Gross, high-school friends from New Orleans who have been collaborating since their first short video in 1997. After originally recording for electro powerhouse Warp Records, the band are self-releasing their second album, The Automatic Process, available on February 25, 2011 (physical to be releasd March 25, 2011)

Inspired early on by music from the likes of Massive Attack, Boards of Canada, Depeche Mode, and Phillip Glass, HOME VIDEO intertwine the classically-trained sensibilities of Gross with the confessional and at times existential lyrics of Ruffino. With The Automatic Process, the band layers samples, synthesizers, piano, guitar, and live drums to build an electro-tinted minimalist rock that drives steadily towards the sublime — a spacious soundtrack evocative of a fractured dream.

Warp Records released Home Video’s first two EPs in 2004: That You Might, a 10” single that immediately picked up considerable attention in Britain from BBC Radio 1 and the NME, and Citizen EP, a five-song release that earned the band a feature in Rolling Stone. In 2006, US-based Defend Music released the band’s debut album, No Certain Night or Morning. With infectious tracks like “Sleep Sweet” and “Gas Tank”, it’s no surprise that Grammy-nominated DJ Sasha picked two songs from the album to remix for his most recent release, Involver 2, which also included songs from Thom Yorke, Apparat and M83. HOME VIDEO themselves have recently taken to the role of remixer, reworking songs for bands like Bear in Heaven, Wave Machines, Faunts, Bang Gang, and friends Naked Hearts.

HOME VIDEO produce all their music themselves, and adapt their studio creations into full-on live performances featuring a drummer and hypnotic visual projections. During Home Video’s first European tour they had the opportunity to play in London with Blonde Redhead, who later invited the band to support them for three weeks of shows in North America. Since then, HOME VIDEO have opened for such diverse acts as Justice, Yeasayer, Flying Lotus, Pinback, DJ Krush, Colder, and Radio 4. Taking advantage of Ruffino’s film education, the band has also made several of their own music videos. The band’s video for “I Can Make You Feel It” premiered on MTV2’s Subterranean, and had over 200,000 views after being featured for a week on the front page of YouTube.com.

The Automatic Process will be released Febraruy 25th, 2011 (physical to be released March 25th). Building on the band’s 2009 EP, It Will Be OK EP, expect more of their best, with key songs “The Smoke”, “An Accident”, “Every Love That Ever Was”, and the title track, “The Automatic Process”. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming shows, videos, and remixes.

Join the big inequality debate." style="float:left;padding:0 10px 10px 0;" >
Annie Lennox and the EQUALS partnership of charities invite you to Join the Big Inequality Debate and celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, on 8 March 2011

Oxfam’s global ambassador and Barclays Woman of the Year, Annie Lennox OBE, has brought together a coalition of charities that champion women’s rights to ensure that the centenary of International Women’s Day (IWD), on 8 March, is a catalyst for celebration and positive change.

The EQUALS coalition comprises ActionAid, Amnesty International, Care International UK, The Fawcett Society, Oxfam, Plan International, Save the Children, The White Ribbon Alliance For Safe Motherhood, Women’s Aid and Women for Women International. It is supported by an evolving partnership of organisations, including 1Goal, Dance4Life, Merlin, Mumsnet, Object, One World Action, UKFeminista, VSO, WomanKind and Women for Refugee Women, and is collaborating with arts partners such as Birds Eye View, Brightwide, Britdoc/Good Screenings, Funny Women and the Southbank Centre.

Annie Lennox says: “EQUALS brings together the expertise of some of the most respected and influential charities that champion women’s rights. A lot has changed since 1911, but there is still a long way to go. Gender inequality continues to permeate all sectors of society, from health and education to politics, employment and culture. The EQUALS partnership aims to step up the call for a more equal world and galvanise a new generation of men and women to work together to make gender parity a lived reality here in the UK and worldwide.”

Join the Big Inequality Debate…

Around the world, millions of people celebrate International Women’s Day every year. In China women have the day off work, in Bosnia and Italy women are given gifts of flowers and in Cameroon women dance in the streets in celebration. Yet in the UK, the event has gone largely unnoticed…until now. This centenary year will be a turning point.

EQUALS is prompting a big debate about what inequality looks like 100 years after the first International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated in 1911. We are inviting men and women to reflect on the progress that has been made in women’s rights, to discuss the inequalities that still exist, share experiences and ideas with people around the globe, and take action to transform the lives of those women and girls who remain excluded and violated. Throughout the week of 8 March and in the run up to IWD, EQUALS will be raising awareness through a series of innovative projects, events, multimedia initiatives and arts partnerships.

EQUALS will be prompting the public to discuss inequality at home, at work, at school, in community centres, universities and pubs. We will be running a series of flash-mob dance-offs around the globe and encouraging communities everywhere to host their own parties in houses, streets and workplaces. A nationwide poll will be commissioned to test perceptions and experiences of gender equality, and our social media content on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube will tap the pulse of popular opinion. A campaign film is also in production, and we will be launching a 60-second film competition. Visitors to our website, www.weareequals.org, will be able to register a personal pledge for equality and access information about all the latest EQUALS events and activities from the end of February.

Haven’t we already achieved gender equality?

While much has been achieved over the last 50 years in terms of women’s rights in the UK, we have a long way to go. Times have changed, but sadly some of the key issues have not. Research shows that women in the UK and worldwide still face high levels of abuse, and violence and gender inequality continues to permeate all sectors of society.

Gender-based violence causes more deaths and disabilities among women worldwide, aged 15-44, than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war, and three million women across the UK experience rape, domestic violence, trafficking, forced marriage or other violence each year. Only 19% of the world’s parliamentary seats are held by women and men still make up nearly 80% of the House of Commons. Women do two-thirds of the world’s work, yet receive 10% of the world’s income and own 1% of the means of production. The full-time pay gap between women and men in the UK is equivalent to men being paid a full year whilst women effectively work for free after November. Only 24% of the people interviewed, heard, seen or read about in mainstream broadcast and print news are female.

We invite you to check our website holding page, www.weareequals.org, for more key facts and figures and for press releases on coalition projects and events, as well as initiatives by our individual charity partners. Our main site will launch at the end of February.

You can find us on Facebook here and on Twitter here.

NOTES TO EDITORS

EQUALS can offer a range of engaging ideas for media content to kick off the Big Inequality Debate including access to soon-to-be-announced high profile events, and interviews with the CEOs of our coalition charities and celebrity ambassadors for the campaign. We are also able to source poignant and uplifting personal stories from around the world featuring young women (and men) directly affected by gender and inequality issues.

The EQUALS coalition founding charities are:

ActionAid, Amnesty International, Care International UK, The Fawcett Society, Oxfam, Plan International, Save the Children, The White Ribbon Alliance For Safe Motherhood, Women’s Aid, Women for Women International.

The wider EQUALS partnership also includes:

1Goal, Dance4Life, Merlin, Mumsnet, Object, One World Action, UKFeminista, VSO, WomanKind and Women for Refugee Women.

Our evolving group of arts partners include:

Birds Eye View, Brightwide, Britdoc/Good Screenings, FILMCLUB, Funny Women, Sphinx Theatre, Southbank Centre.

The latter, The 20th Anniversary Collection, lays it down with essential house tracks, including ones from icons Frankie Knuckles and Marshall Jefferson.

He has a fair few good albums, and, after almost 20 years, a new album of original material coming out next year (it’s split into three EPs that impatient fan club members can get hold of early). He’s been up to a lot in the meantime, working in California on video games, cd-roms, virtual reality (remember?) and digital synthesizers–if you have a mobile phone with a polyphonic ringtone, guess who you can thank. These days he’s busy curating the music programme for TED (Technology, Entertainment Design), a series of conferences where crazy smart (or obnoxiously successful – sometimes it’s a fine line) scientists and creative types give 18-minute talks on their fields of expertise. The original TED events were invite-only, sort of like Davos or a less-evil Bilderberg summit, but available online to anyone who’s curious. They’re a good fit: both TED and Dolby are driven by a wildly inquisitive tech-geek sensibility that looks for fun ways to hack a dying planet.
